Dr Morgan Pokorny

Dr Pokorny is a highly qualified New Zealand-trained urologist. He graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Cape Town in 1998 and completed his basic Urology training in New Zealand in 2008. He then went to Brisbane to undertake a clinical and research fellowship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he was awarded a PhD in 2013 for his thesis on the molecular biology of prostate cancer. During this time, he gained experience in laparoscopic kidney surgery and general urology and became an expert in stone surgery.

In 2014, in Belgium, Dr Pokorny completed a robotic surgery fellowship under Prof. Alex Mottrie, a world-renowned figure in the field. Here, he received intensive training in robotic radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, pyeloplasty and robotic reconstructive surgery. He has performed over 300 robotic surgery procedures for prostate and kidney cancer.

Dr Pokorny played a crucial role in assisting Dr Les Thompson with the first Australian trial using prostate MRI and MRI-guided biopsy in the diagnosis of prostate cancer between 2011 and 2014. The study was published in European Urology in 2014 and has become a landmark paper. Dr Pokorny is now an expert in prostate MRI and has chaired the USANZ Prostate MRI workshop at the USANZ Annual Scientific meeting. He has been invited to speak on prostate MRI at international meetings on multiple occasions.

Dr Pokorny is involved in active research through Counties Manukau Health and reviews for several prominent urological journals. He is highly skilled in robotic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, stone surgery and general urology.
